These two Guides for Successful Construction Projects are quick, yet rich, time-tested tips and standards for beginning and maintaining any construction project in a positive and mutually successful manner. They were developed from the direct experience of years of running my own small construction business, and working as a mediator.
Both were written for anyone associated with a construction project. The Property Owner Guide’s target audience is self-explanatory, and the Contractor’s Guide is really for any professional involved in the field or construction or related areas of work, such as contractors, architects, developers, subcontractors and real estate agents, and more. At the same time, both “sides” might find the other’s Guides for Successful Construction Projects helpful.
With quality work as a given, clear, honest and intentional relationships in construction are fundamentally important. This is the domain of these Guides for Successful Construction Projects. It is about the relationships, and the factors that contribute to the establishment and feeding of a healthy, successful working relationship.
The Property Owner Guides offer tips on choosing a contractor, creating a clear and detailed contract that focuses on details of the project, being comfortable with your contractor, and then launching your project in a shared attitude of openness and the intention of mutual success. There is also advice on being prepared for your project ahead of time.
The Contractor Guides address similar points covered in the Property Owner Guides, along with information specific to being a construction professional. The advice about communication, clarity and the writing of contracts is the same, for example, but for construction professionals I have included information that I know is important from my thirty years of experience as a carpenter/contractor.
These Guides have emerged from my years of experience and my ongoing urge to improve the construction experience for my customers and myself. I have also learned a great deal from observing the experience of others and from having mediated construction disputes.
It should be noted that the guidance given within also applies to existing projects.
The Guides are rugged, laminated single 8 ½ x 11 sheets, full on both sides. It took me a year and a half to pare down and focus my key advice onto two pages! In a way it was easier to write the book I will have for sale soon. Everything contained in the two Guides has worked for me.
